Upgrading your EndNote software

If you are upgrading from an earlier version of EndNote, You will need to do the following:

  1. Back up your EndNote Library along with any EndNote styles, filters or connectors that you have customised.
  2. Uninstall the old EndNote application before installing the new version, as it can interfere with the linking to Word if you retain both versions of the program.

For information on how to do this refer to the following resources.

When you install EndNote it writes a 'cite-while-you-write' toolbar into Word. You should open EndNote first, and then open Word to check to see if this has happened. If not, check the EndNote help on Install Word CWYW Toolbar.

Updates to filters, connectors and styles

EndNote works with filters to pull records from databases into EndNote, connectors to search out to PubMed from within EndNote and styles to format referencing according to various styles (such as publisher specific styles, as well as Vancouver, Harvard, APA etc).

There are many thousands of styles available and it is advisable to check you have the latest.
Styles can be freely downloaded from the EndNote site.

Available EndNote downloads.

If you are installing the new files on a home PC or Mac, you can double-click on the file and it will automatically open in EndNote. Click on 'File' then 'Save as', remove the 'copy' from the end of the file name and save (for connectors or filters).
